I have been trying to link a XP Home laptop via Ethernet to a DSL router and have been unable to do so. In the Event Viewer under Administrative Tools, I get the following two error events every time I connect the Ethernet card to the router

A) The SYMDTI service failed to start due to the following error: The System cannot find the file specified
B) The DHCP Client service depends on the SYMTDI service, which failed to start because of the following error: The system cannot find the file specified

What is the SYMDTI service and how can I repair it
Thanks

Note that it is "SYMTDI service" and not "SYMDTI service"
Most of the time that you see anything about "SYM" in an error
message, SYMANTEC is involved.

Many thanks! Now that I think of it I did have Norton Antivirus installed at one point and then removed it...
