I like simple tools. I have many files with long names and when I try to
drag and drop them onto a data CD, I get a bossy message telling me the file
name is too long to fit. then when I try to cut down the name, I am warned
that if I rename the file it may become unusable..what is a girl to do!

All I need is a tool/programme that is simple to use...What do you all use?

Please advise me.I have posted this in the other Freeware Newsgroup too..I
am desperate!

Head over to http://fileutil.tripod.com/ and scroll down and pick
up a copy of Rname-it. Simple? Hey, if I can figure it out, so can
you! :)

Seabat..Thanks..I downloaded the programme..but it is too difficult for me
to understand.

I will give you an example of what I want to do:

I have a file that says: Verdi: Rigoletto Act 4 Un Di se ben rammentomi
bella figlia dell'amore and then goes on to enumerate the artists..This tag
is far too lonf..all I want to do is to chop off the end to leave simply:

Verdi Rigoletto Un Di Se Ben Rammentomi

I am finding the renaming programme difficult to understand...sorry. I did
warn I am a bit thick!

How many do you have ? Is it too difficult to do it manually, or do
you not know how to do this ?

Click on the file name, then type in a replacement name

You can do several things:
- tell your CD-writer program to use long filenames (enable "Joliet")
- put the files in an archive (e.g. ZIP etc.) that supports long filenames
- rename them but be sure to keep the extension the same

An easy file rename tool is "Oscar's Renamer".

If you can't *see* the file extensions with Explorer then by all means
fix it so you can...

Type in "file extensions"
select "hiding, showing"

Well, dadiOH,

Why is it that the simplest things work?

Thanks to all for their assistance in remedying my problem...I now realise I
did not need any renaming programme...All I needed to do was to learn more
...my excuse is age. My short term memory is almost non existent. I had been
trying to rename the whole file and must have removed the file extension.

OK, dadiOH..now what shall I do to transform the Rigoletto file that I
managed to change from an MP3 to a windows file..how do I get it back to an
MP3..or do I delete and download all over again.

Your most ignorant student.

PS..I still use CD Extreme which you pointed me towards!

Since you so seem willing to learn:

CDExtreme defaults to Microsoft Joliet and allows up to 106 ANSI
characters plus DOS tree. The other options are...

1. ISO Level 1: 8+3; A-Z, 0-9 and underscore characters only
2. ISO Level 2: 8+3; any DOS character
3. ISO Level 2 Long: up to 212 characters (any DOS character)

After you select "data" as the type of disc to make, there will be a
button somewhere for "Options" (not the one under "Tools" on the
title bar). I can't tell you exactly where as I am using RecordNow
and its GUI is a bit different.

If you don't see the options button, try right clicking in the
compilation window area...I get a pop up menu with "recording options"
as a choice. Clicking on that gets you a form titled "Data Job
Options". Once you have that, click on the arrow for the drop down
box for the "File System Type" in the CD frame area. The default is
Microsoft Joliet which allows you up to 106 characters. No need to
ever change it unless you have files with names longer than that.

One of the most irritating things about XP is that by default the file
extensions are hidden. To rectify this, in Windows Explorer go to
Tools>View>Uncheck "Hide extensions for known file types".

There are some other option available, including:

Display file size information in folder tips
Display simple folder view in Explorer's Folders list
Display the contents of system folders
Display the full path in the address bar
Display the full path in the title bar
Do not cache thumbnails
Hidden files and folders
Do not show hidden files and folders
Show hidden files and folders
Hide extensions for known file types
Hide protected operating system files (Recommended)
Launch folder windows in a separate process
Managing pairs of Web pages and folders
Show and manage the pair as a single file
Show both parts and manage them individually
Show both parts but manage as a single file
Remember each folder's view settings
Restore previous folder windows at logon
Show Control Panel in My Computer
Show encrypted or compressed NTFS files in color
Show pop-up description for folder and desktop items

I've had a difficult time making sense of file rename software which I
needed for shortening mp3 names to convert them to cda. Doing it manually
took too long. I found this program and although all I know how to do is
use the replace function and replace the part I cut off with a hyphen it
works fine:

Yeah, you'll find irritations. They're farcically easy to overcome if
you're not determined to fixate on the negative. Last MS OS I had
that worked reliably was Dos. This particular Home XP system has been
up since I got it - 510 days.

I might, one day, espouse Linux, were it not for the unutterably
horrid, argumentative and experienceless geeks who espouse it in the
newsgroups. After all, it's only a clone of Unix, familiar to us all
20 years ago. An OS is an OS. A good program is useful. Stop the OS
nonesense; advocate good freeware.

Re the use of Joliet in CD Extreme. Following the post about it, I went into
the CD extreme programme, but was unable to find The screen where I could
check the number of characters allowed..is it something that occurs
automatically or do I have to adjust the number?

In your Data window, it's under Edit>Recording Options. Or you can
find it on the tool bar.

I like XP and did not wish to imply otherwise -- this does not prevent it
having some irritating features which can usually be fixed. Microsoft is the
eighth wonder of the universe (of which Bill Gates is Master).

Heh. You keeping in with Alan?
