What is the Registry?

Hi,

I see a lot of talk about the Windows Registry and was wondering if
anyone could give me a simple explanation of what it is and what it
does?

1. Bring up the Help and Support Center by pressing Windows+F1 keys
at the same time.

2. Type "Registry" (no quotes) in the search window.

3. In the results, under "Overviews", click "Windows Registry".

While I'm the first to criticize the gaps in the Windows help system,
there's quite a lot there and it's always the first place I look. The
short article I just pointed you to is a good beginning.
