I am confused about auto archive setting. This apparently does not create a
backup of the entire .pst file, only those that are over a certain "age"
that is designated in the Tools -> Options -> Other -> Auto Archive
settings? what if I have Run Auto Archive set to every 1 day and do not
have archive or delete old items selected? Will it not do anything?

Thanks :)

Correct on both counts. AutoArchive is designed to periodically move or
delete older items from your default message store file. It usually uses
the Modified date of an item to determine whether or not that item is ready
to be archived. (An exception would be an item that is set to occur in the
future, such as an appointment -- in that case the appointment date would be
later than the Modified date, and the earlier date would be examined by AA).
If you have set AA to run every day but do not specify any other criteria,
either at the global level or for a specific folder, AA will run but nothing
will be archived or deleted. To set AA for a specific folder, right-click
the folder, select Properties, then the AutoArchive tab. (Folder specific
settings override the global settings.)
