I am running Windows XP Pro

What is the difference between a LAN connection standalone and a LAN
connection that is bridged through the Network Bridge?

Any help very much appreciated

the network bridge is if you have to seperate networks
you can bridge the two, so that someone on one network
can also see the other network

A situation in which you'd use it:

Let's say you've got a cablemodem, two computers with TWO NICS EACH and a
PS2.

Connect Comp1 to the internet:
cablemodem <-> [ISP-assigned IP] Comp1

Enable ICS on Comp1 and connect Comp2:
cablemodem <-> [ISP-assigned IP] Comp1 [192.168.0.1] <-> [192.168.0.2] Comp2

Now let's connect the PS2 to Comp2. We can't use ICS to do it because the IP
192.168.0.1 is already in use.

Bridge the NICS on Comp2 and connect the PS2:
cablemodem <-> [ISP-assigned IP] Comp1 [192.168.0.1] <-> [192.168.0.2] Comp2
[192.168.0.2] <-> [192.168.0.3] PS2
