My motherboard currently uses a 1.6GHZ Pentium 4.

It is about 18 months old. It uses a SIS 645/961 chipset and a
400Mhz FSB.

How can I determine the fastest CPU I can use ?

The only CPU's that I can find that are 400Mhz FSB are Celeron's ? The
Pentium 4's are all either 533 or 800 Mhz.

I do a lot of video editing and find the 1.6 Pentium 4 a bit slow. I
would prefer not to have to upgrade the MOB as I am on a tight budget.

thks

Hi,

The first thing I'd do is go to the web page of the mb maker for your
board and see the highest speed cpu that can be run on the mb. I took a look
on newegg.com 's site and found a 2.4 ghz P4 that runs at fsb 400, so
they're still in supply. to at least that speed. Check the bios updates for
your board as well to see if the maker added any additional features that
you might need to take advantage of should you want to upgrade.

If it is socket 423, I think the fastest made was 2.0Ghz. If it is socket
478, the fastest 400 Mhz bus P4 made was the 2.6Ghz.

You're kind of out of luck about not having to upgrade the motherboard to
get a decent speed boost. The remaining Celerons with the 400 MHz FSB are
slowww.
