Question: what is the file DLLHOST.EXE for?

Basis: I reinstalled win2000pro (cleanboot, service pak 3); Ultraedit, ACDsee,
Agent, Opera a starting setup I've used for ages.

This time I noticed taskmanger>processes>DLLHOST.exe was loaded. I've never seen
this program loaded before, but no big deal.

I use a dialup to call out, nobody else has access here. While online I noticed
I was sending out more than I was receiving. This was even after multiple
reboots and/or disconnect/reconnects, 64 megs sent out at one point. I don't
allow file/printer sharing so I just lived with it for a day.

I multi-boot into 2000pro and have 98se and XP that I can work with. there is no
problem with the other two systems. both show normal send/receive bytes when
connected. and MSinfo32 doesn't show DLLHOST.exe loaded even though all systems
show the file available to them (in their path directories).

So I renamed the file, booted into 2000 and my send/receive rates are normal.
but Opera now crashes, as does the ras, me thinks it misses the file.

I looked at the DLLHOST.exe file and it does function with the com ports in some
manner.

Anybody know anything about this DLLHOST file or how to stop my output problem,
I don't have a program to view a tcp/ip packet so have no clue what I'm sending
out, I figure maybe I'm pinging the living heck out of someone.

Thanks

Seeing as how I posted here for help on a file (DLLHOST.exe), I should at least
report on my find and fix. Of course in case someone else runs into this
situation it might help. I really don't think so though as it should of never
happened.

All I could ever find out about DLLHOST were of people having memory problems
with it; bad problems. My complaint was it was sending out requests(?) as fast
as it could nonstop from the moment it was connect till disconnect.

DLLHOST is activated by a Java command and grows and shrinks in size as needed.
Apparently I hit a web page that set it off. Best guess is I hit a web page that
requested it's service then terminated the link (crash, closed it, whatever).
Yet it wasn't through and by god it was going to finish it's task.

I did what I should of done in the first place uncompressed DLLHOST from the
service pack and replaced it with what was installed. Works fine now.
