My mom has one with a 1.4 gig Athlon now and I am wondering if she can
upgrade.

Also, what is the latest bios available for this MB and does anyone have a
link to it? The latest I saw an Asus' site was 1.09, but I have heard there
are newer versions out there.

James,

http://www.asus.com/support/cpusupport/cpusupport.aspx

choose "query by motherboard"

select "socket a (462)" (you'll have to scroll down)

then choose the A7A266.

The fastest CPU listed is an Athlon XP 2600+ (Thoroughbred), which wants
BIOS 1012. The link to 1012 seems to work.

As a double-check, you'll want a CPU with a 266 MHz FSB. I guess that the
Barton CPUs with that front side bus are unsupported, though.

HTH.

Yes.
Athlon XP 2400+(Model 10)(Thorton), board rev 1.10, bios 1012
Athlon XP 2600+(266FSB)(Model 8)(Thoroughbred), board 1.10, bios 1012

One thing that is not on the Asus lists for the the A7A and
A7N motherboards are the various Athlon MP processors. They
all work just fine in those motherboards.

The MP 2800+ is not only the fastest 266 MHz FSB Athlon, but
because it is a Barton it also has a 512 KB L2. It doesn't
seem to overclock well, though. The only one I tried only
overclock by about 10% (increased FSB clock from 133 to 145).
