What is the easiest way to work with overlayed shapes?

I have a slide with a lot of animated shapes on it which are overlaying each
other. If I need to make a change to the one on the very bottom it requires a
lot of time and patience to move things around and putting them back to their
spot.

Does anyone have a suggestion how to make this process faster and easier?

PowerPoint 2007 users can use the Visibility task pane for something like
this.

I'm guessing you are using PowerPoint 2003 or earlier. Try out the Select
Multiple objects tool.
