What is the difference between the Microsoft Community
"microsoft.public.windows.vista.general" and the newsgroup
"microsoft.public.windows.vista.general" on the news server
"news.microsoft.com"?

Two different ways to access the newsgroup, one via a the MS web
interface and one any way you want.

===============================
It's the same newsgroup. The difference
is whether you access it on the web or in
your newsreader.

Two different ways to access the same posts. The communities interface is
there primarily for users who are looking for solutions and are unaware of
newsgroups.

I access both via Windows Mail. What is the difference?

I access both via Windows Mail which I use for text groups. I use Pan
for binaries.

So what is the difference?

The difference is that one is web based, which can only be accessed with a
browser, and the other is accessed with a newsreader like Windows Mail. Here
is a link to one of the web based community groups.

http://www.microsoft.com/communitie...spx?dg=microsoft.public.windows.vista.general

The web based groups are a mirror of what is posted on the newsgroups.
Windows mail does include some of the features of the web based interface.

What Communities interface?

Basically 2 names for the exact same newsgroup. Can be reached either via
news.microsoft.com or msnews.microsoft.com in Windows Mail. The default one
already set up in WinMail is called Microsoft Communities and is accessed
via msnews.microsoft.com.

I access Microsoft Communities with Windows Mail newsreader.

One utilizes the crap CDO web interface, the other is not hobbled like that.
