What is the difference between Pre-RC1 and RC1?

When I began public beta testing I d/l and install Beta 2 and I don't
remember the build number now. But when I recieved the email to d/l Pre-RC1
it is Pre-RC1 build 5536. I see people refereing to Pre-RC1 and RC1. Are
they different? In reading I have also seen different build numbers referred
to. So in one build eTrust EZ antivirus works and in another build it
doesn't. Do we all have different builds?

Various builds have been available to different channels. Like the
original Beta2 (Build 5384), RC1 (Build 5600) should be available to
everyone within the next few days and weeks.

If you don't have access to 5600, you might wait a few days and see if
you get another e-mail before spending time on 5536.

Ok, I think I understand now. Since I am a public tester and don't have
subscription to msdn I can't get RC1 (build 5600) yet.

Of interest I got eTrust EZ antivirus to work in Pre-RC1 build 5536 but
every time I boot I have to tell windows defender (or at least I think it's
windows defender) to permit it to load at start up. When I talked to
Computer Associates about it they told me I needed to uninstall win defender
and see if it worked. I don't think I will uninstall win defender, if push
comes to shove I will uninstall eTrust first. After all, I won't be beta
testing forever and when it expires I will end up using xp all the time and
free avg works just fine with win defender.

Actually I was never going to give up my win98se. I loved it. In March I
finally took the leap to xp and in June or maybe it was July got the public
download of Vista beta 2 just to see if I could do it. When ever it is
finally realeased from what I see as the prices I will have to wait a while.
My computer is just barely rated high enough to be doing this anyway.

Thank you I think I understand better now. I am a public tester and don't
have a subscription to msdn so I don't have access to RC1 build 5600 yet. Or
at least I can't find a link to it.

Of interest, I originally could not install eTrust EZ antivirus on Pre-RC1
build 5536, but finally hit the run program button anyway and it did install.
Now it appears to me that windows defender is what is not allowing it to
start when I boot to vista. I tried to let computer associates know as the
program compatibility assistant suggested. Their resolution is to uninstall
win defender. I don't think I will do that, I will uninstall eTrust first.
Eventually the free AVG I use in xp will work.
