This is probably a very basic piece of knowledge, but I'm stumped. What for,

The simple (but not so useful) answer is that it depends on what it is.
It could be another hard disk (or the one hard disk may be partitioned into
two parts). Have a look at Windows Explorer. if the icon next to the D: is
a hard disk (the same as the C
it is a hard disk and may be to store
files.
It could be a network drive (a drive contained in another computer accessed
over a network).
It could be a CD drive (for reading program and music CDs and possibly a CDR
for writing same. Again have a look at Windows Explorer.
Likewise it could be a DVD drive.
They're the most likely answers.

later you will probably ruin out of space there, and *have* to move some
things to D:

And another option is it's a virtual drive used by another program that disallows you to do anything with it such as a HP All-in-one printer scanner that sets up a virtual drive for it's purposes.
