There is a program called "find-a-drug" that harnesses the spare power on peoples computer to find cures for things like cancer. It targets certain strains with various combatants by making a super computer out of thousands of users home PCs. It doesn't slow PCs down at all, as it uses spare power when you aren't doing much.
