Is RC1 officially out?

I haven't heard news of it being out. Just the pre-RC1 beta the other day.

Pete

It was released to TechBeta today along with a letter from Jim Alchin
stating that this was the official RC1. I am downloading the x86 and x64
versions now.

Colin,
I don't know if you know the answer to this or not but do you have any
insight as to why a Pre RC1 would come so close to the actual RC1 release?
I don't get it!

Sweet. I'm 2 hours, 40 minutes from RC1 right now. Awesomeness!

Well, it's hard to tell the difference between 5552 & 5600, if there is
any difference.

Hello,

I think the only reason they put the Pre-RC1 build out to the public so
close to RC1 was to get the public feedback on any "showstopper" issues that
might prevent a successful RC1 release. Or they just did it to satisfy the
public craving for a new build.

How do you get RC1????

It was a preview release of RC1 to get feedback for confirming MS's opinion
that 5536 was a good candidate for release as RC1. It was not meant to be
the basis for debugging because there was not a lot of time to do it. The
instructions to TB emphacized the need to check out upgrade scenarios (XP to
Vista), not bugfind.

I suspect the decision to release RC1 now had been made several weeks ago
with the caveat that if TechBeta spotted any showstoppers the release could
be deferred.

Build 5600 for RC1 is an arbitrary build number (intentionally rounded up)
so there is no real way to know if it is 5536 reissued or really has
substantial changes from 5536 (I doubt it).

The choice of a rounded up build number happened with XP also. The launched
build was 2600 but that was a round-up from the last build number which was
25xx (I don't recall the exact number). The "guess the build" game is over
for us.

It is possible that Vista Gold will be build 5600 and the only versioning
change will be in the follow-on string.

You wait. Figure on about next Thursday for CPP. You will be notified by
email if you are a CPP participant.

So when will we get our CPP DVDs?

It shouldn't be long. You will get an email first. MS conducted the media
survey with the TechBeta folks last week to determine how many were willing
to opt out of the dvd mailing and just use the downloads.

The official RC1 came out today. It is build 5600-16384.

The 5600 part i can understand but what does 16384 mean? It's not the
build-number and not a date/time. Might it be a "patch-level", that is
some parts of the system has been rebuilt after patching but not a full
build?

Actually, the full string is 5600.16384.060829-2230

Now there's something for you to chew on. :)

Obviously, the date is 8/29/06. I guess the rest is left to the student as
an exercise.

My bet is that Vista Gold will be build 5600 and the patch level will
distinguish it from RC1. Manufacturers have been instructed that 5600 is
their reference build for developing their Vista products.
