Every so often I see a small blue rectangular window, sort of ghostly, at the
lower right hand side of my screen. I did have Windows Messanger installed
for a while, but removed it last week. The blue screen is still showing
every so often. Today it displayed message that normally comes in my email.
Once last week it gave me a message that was rather lewd.

Is this spy/ad ware or some hack comiing in through a virus? Our
anti-virus is up to date and did not show anything.

Or is this a normal part of Windows that came with a new update

Not a normal part of Windows. Could be a leftover from a flavor of
Messenger.

For clarification of the issue:

Windows Messenger comes with XP. It's ad-free and relatively harmless. It
does not hook into email.

MSN Messenger is a different animal. I'm not very familiar with it though
but I do believe it hooks mail. If it was MSN Messenger, you will want to
repost your question in an MSN messenger newsgroup.

And you can't uninstall Windows Messenger. It is an integral part of Windows
and apparently Windows won't run without it. Uninstalling Messenger using
the Windows Components feature in Add/Remove programs only removes the
shortcuts for Messenger.

So you may still be logged in to Messenger and the messages are probably
related to that. If you're getting lewd messages from people not on your
contact list you may very well have a virus related to messenger. There have
been several. Make sure your A/V is up to date.

And change your Messenger password and then make sure you're logged out.

Sure you can uninstall Windows Messenger:
