What is the best Spam, firewall and virus software?

I have Zone Alarm and Norton System Works 2004. All don't help me that
much, and all have problems that really piss me off and they screw up my
computer a lot. System Works will not install and Zone Alarm will not let me
download anything unless I turn it off. Customer support is no where to be
found or answered, or is able to solve anything. What software is left out
there that really works. Is there maybe a package that has a good virus
program, a good Firewall, and a good Spam program. Almost any amount of
money is OK if it works. I don't mind 3 different programs as well, as long
as they work and the company has a decent support program. Any help is
appreciated..............Peter

I have used ZoneAlarm for years. Your problem with it is in the way you have
configured it. Open ZA and see the tutorial, it should help you get it set
up properly.

This may start a war but, I swore off Norton/Symantec products years ago.
Except for the AV, I found that they caused more problems than they
resolved. Perhaps if a person wanted to devote many hours to learning all
the ins and outs of them, they might work.......? AVG is a free AV that many
posters to this group use, myself included.

Your best defense against spam is, don't let out your e-address, especially
in newsgroups or any other public place.

My opinion -
Zone Alarm, with a little reading (as noted by JAX), is easy to use and does
the job.
I use Norton antivirus and have no problems with it. Have read good things
about AVG (free) from
http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php
A couple of great adware killers - AdAware from Lavasoft and Spybot Search &
Destroy - update and used regularly go a long way to keeping the pc clean
AdAware - http://www.lavasoftusa.com/
Spybot - http://www.safer-networking.org/
I also use Mailwasher on one of my email accounts that I was silly enough to
post with way back when I didn't know any better :) get it from
http://www.mailwasher.net/index.php
Good luck

Using ZA Pro, MailWasher Pro, PestPatrol, and NAV ***not SystemWorks***.
Each may have to be configured for your usage.
Symantec is the only one with problems for individual tech support
questions, my experiences.

Hi
I have just had a laptop for christmas. It came XP Home installed. I have
W98SE on my desktop. It also had Norton installed and the first thing I have
done is taken it off. I use Zone Alarm and Computer Assoicated EZ Anti
Virus on my desktop and both work well for me. Before I can connect I ahve
got to figure out if I can get my EZ AV and Zone Alarm (without connecting
to the Internet) on to my laptop which at the moment isn't proving easy. I
have saved the progs off my desktop onto CD rom but trying to find out what
bits I should 'Run' to install on my laptop has got me beat at the moment.

Rather than try to install Zone Alarm from a cd - enable the windows XP
firewall - then once you have d/loaded ZA you can disable it. Assuming you
have already set up your connection go to Control Panel > Network & Internet
Connections > Network Connections > Right click your connection > select
Properties > Advanced tab & check the box. This way you can protect yourself
long enough to get your programs up & running

Many thanks for the input from all of you. I guess I have to really learn
the programs then and keep what I got. Is there no answer from any of you
nice people here, on the setting for allowing downloads? I always have to
turn off the ZA program to download anything. What I usually get is no
warning from ZA or anything, it will just not work, making me think that I
screwed up someplace. I wish it would warn me about a setting that I need to
change for the download. Well, maybe that is too much probably for ZA to
address. I'm kind of a dummy when it comes to looking at ZA and its
configuration. Any more help is appreciated........
I don't even know how to protect my email address in here, could someone
tell me how to do that?..........Do I just list (e-mail address removed) instead of
what my real email address is w/o the spam? and then have a signature add-in
say remove the spam from my address for any personal email?

Hi Lynn,

You can open the CD and double click the icons of each to install them. I
have all of my downloaded App's on a disk and, after they are installed, I
look for updates at the respective web-sites.

Hi Peter,

If you are still following this thread, to munge your e-address, go to
"tools" in OE newsreader and select "accounts>properties". Change your
e-address and name to anything you want. Make whatever you use after the @
mark something stupid so that someone at a legitimate address don't get
spammed.

Check my address for an example.

Best, JAX

SpamPal with a Bayesian plug-in for an antispam
Try Mozilla Thunderbird. It has built in Anti spam filtering. It learns
what is spam (Junk) by itself with a little help from you. It's still
only Beta but still better than Outlook or OE, IMO.

The best way however to avoid spam in the first place is as mentioned
by other replies. Don't use your real email address when posting to NG's.

Hi Jax
So are you saying that if I run my CD with ZA on it for instance and I
double click every icon that has a .exe in turn it will then install that
prog for me? I think my AV has about 8 icons that are .exe

Lynn, you need the complete program to install the software. Redownload the programs with your other machine, burn them to a CD, then install them on the new machine.

Just copying the .exe files from the old machine doesn't copy many of the essential elements of the program that are installed to other places, such as common files, system32, etc. Redownload & install the programs.

You need a firewall, but the XP firewall is fine if you don't like ZA.
You need to enable Automatic Updates.
I like AVG and I set it to run in the background and scan each file when
opened. It intercepts downloads and email attachments. You don't need to
enable any email settings. It has incremental updates, so let it update
every day.
You should also use Pivx Quik-Fix to close some IE vulnerabilities that
allow malware to get past your AV and firewall.
The best spam filters are "bayesian". There are plugins for Outlook and
Mozilla Thunderbird has bayesian filtering, but OE doesn't yet support
bayesian filtering. Don't post your real email address in a public
place, either in these newsgroups or on a web page. (Don't let your
friends put your email address on web pages.)

Peter,
If you can find the Norton "Internet Security 2003", buy it. You get the
best Anti-Virus program there is; an excellent Firewall; plus Anti-Spam
programs [which I have turned off because like all Anti-Spam or Anti-Popup
stoppers I have seen, you are blocked from some legitimate sites]. The 2004
version of this is available but has some problems so I would stay away from
it.

Krooz,
Another well written free one is "HiJackThis". It will find stuff the others
will not. Go here to get it:
