Some people prefer to use overtype when correcting existing text,
because (for example), they are fast, accurate typists and it is easier
to flip into overtype mode (if necessary) and retype something than
correct it character-by-character.
Except that you can accomplish the same thing by selecting the text to be
corrected and overtyping it with "Typing replaces selection" enabled, which
works even if the replacement text is a different length from the text being
replaced.

Yes, you can, but some people prefer to do it the other way, even when
they know about selections etc. And that's probably because it's quicker
for them and they don't waste time learning things that they don't need.
