Help!

I have a fast computer (P4 3.0) plenty of memory (1gig) but recently,
whenever I get online through my slow modem the machine acts SLOW. When
downloading a page the mouse freezes for a time, and sometimes locks the
machine and I have to push "reset" as even ctl-alt-del won't bring it back.
I have tried to run task manager to see what is running and I see
"svchost.exe" running 5 times in the process page. Looking at the
Performance page the CPU runs along at about 10% or less but spikes to 100%
when I start downloading a web page. The machine only seems SLOW when I am
online. I have Norton running but I have turned it off and it doesn't seem
to help. I rolled back the mouse software and that seemed to help but it
went back to being slow soon after so I went back to Intellipoint 5.0.174.0.
I am not sure what I changed or added when it started to slow down
origionally.

Thank you for any help.

Allyn

You might have a worm, causing your computer to run as a rogue server, have you been installing all of Microsoft's security updates? do you have a antivirus program installed.
I am guessing you are on cable or adsl.

Can we assume that you've already went into your system startup folder and shut
down applications that you don't want loading at boot? Can we assume that you
have a firewall and anti-spyware programs? If not, these are common problems
associated with slowdowns.

Oh, and Svchost prolly isn't the problem. I have it running that many times, depending
on what other programs use it at any given time.

I have this running on my computer too. Not sure what it is. Hmmm, if it
ends up being something that shouldn't be running on the computer please let
me know!

Thanks
