It's not stupid. Just because you don't know this stuff doesn't make you
stupid. We all have our areas of expertise.

Safe Mode is a diagnostic mode that loads the operating system with a
minimum of drivers, programs, and background processes running. To get
into Safe Mode, repeatedly tap the F8 key as the computer is starting
up. This will get you to the right menu. Navigate using your Up arrow
key; the mouse will not work here.

Safe Mode means the operating system starts in barebones mode and only the
bare minimum of services, devices, startup programs, and drivers are used to
start the operating system. A service is basically an application of sorts
that starts before any user logs onto the computer. Using Safe Mode often
helps in troubleshooting and cleaning malware/spyware because usually [not
always] they are not running in Safe Mode. In XP you can enter msconfig in
the run box and go to services and startup to see much of what normally
starts for those categories when your computer starts and you logon.
Msconfig can also be used in selective startup to help troubleshoot startup
issues with your computer such as when applications conflict with each
other. --- Steve
