What is RAID? (newbie type question)

Sorry for the dumb question. I have a motherboard which has this and I am
wondering how to use it. I know it is (something) to do with mirroring, but
I'd like to know if those extra IDE slots can be used for extra
disks/storage? I have my bootup disk on IDE 1 as master, DVD drive as slave
with two disks as master and slave on IDE 2. I have several drives knocking
about and apart from getting some USB external enclosures can't use them

I would appreciate any guidance,

You would have to connect your two IDE drives to Promise IDE connector(s).
Page 33 in the manual.
Or read section 5.4 . It explains everything.
