Can anyone suggest why I can't bring-up google (which is set as my home
page)? Could spybot or adaware or kerio or avast anti-virus be preventing
me after a recent update? I am stumped! google.com.au appears as a blank
page but for a small red rectangle in the top left hand corner and
google.com appears as a blank page except for the bottom of the second g in
the top left hand corner? Could it be some windows xp or IE setting or a
cookie problem? HELP! Note: I can google if I use the search link from a
third parties web site.
Regards

Is it possible that you have spybots "lock ie start page " ticked under the
immunize section , and youve recently tried to change the homepage to
google?

I had the same problem last year, it turned out to be a software conflict. I
was using a browser called voyager 5000 and after a hard drive reformat I
installled each program on my computer one at a time and checked google
after each install until I discovered which program it was.

Here are some suggestions. you can execute them in any order your guts feels
like.

First, try empty the temporarely internet files. If you have a large cache
and it is full, weird thing will happen to explorer (at least it was still a
problem with the fore last IE update) Restart your IE and try again.

If you stil have problems (also with other sites - would be strange since
you *can* post, but, well, it just might be *IT* - I've seen this irrational
sollution work before)

Reboot your computer, reboot any netwerk components in the path to the
internet (Adsl modems, routers, ect). My SMC wireless router has problems
with big downloads somehow. And blocks any new connections to the internet,
but keeps the old ones open. And yes, I disabled the NAT and any other might
be blockades (Of course I only found this out after the waranty expired.
Good old Murphy!)

Be sure to do at least a full scan scan for:
viruses
AGV (http://www.grisoft.com/us/us_index.php)
Spyware
Ad-aware (http://www.lavasoftusa.com/)
Trojans
A squared 2 (http://www.emsisoft.com/en/software/free/)

Er... now a bit of a long shot: an application of another kind of software
thingy might have affected your hosts file. (google adresses might be
pointing to an other ip adress)

First do a ping tho google.com.au (should be 216.239.39.104)
secondly, do a ping to google.com (should be 216.239.39.99)

If you get a compleet different IP numer you should take a look at your host
file:

Just file seach for the file "hosts" (no extention!). I believe it should be
in either Winnt\system32\drivers\etc or windows\system32\drivers\etc
But i'm not sure if you still use Win 95 or Win 98 (Then it has to be in the
windows directory somewhere)

You view the file with notepad
Search if there is an entree for google. If there is, I think deleting this
entry (the whole line) is the best option. Save the file (Be sure it does
not get a file extention. you cen either remove the .txt part in the windows
explorer or use the "file"--> "save as..." and select "all documents" to
save the file)

BTW am I the only one who hates the new xp (home ed.) way of searching and
editing unknown files. It takes way more actions as w2k does.

if this still has no avail, you can either - cals your isp, asking if they
fck-ed teir dns server, or pray tho the god(s) of your choise. Personally, I
found hiting the computer repeatedly not usefull but very stress relaving
(until it breaks, that is)

You don't say what flavour of Windoze or IE you use, and bearing in mind
what others have already said, I'd tend to check the Hosts file for naughty
entries pointing to local or perhaps (not mentioned before) registry
corruption. If all else fails, if you can, it might be worth trying Scanreg
/Restore and choosing a saved registry copy from before the problem first
happened.

g in the top left hand corner?

What else do you have installed? Proxomitron? eDexter? DNSKong?

The small red rectangle is typical of some security program that has
blocked a site based on a HOSTS file entry. eDexter will load a small GIF
in that instnce.

I used to run all three of these, but got tired of being blocked from
commercial sites because the supplied HOSTS file listed that site.

Try a little program called "BHODemon" . It will check your registry and see
if any program is trying to hijack your browser.

I can think of only 3 BHO's (Browser Helper Objects) that are legitimate:

*Adobe Acrobat helper
*Spybot "Immunize" helper
*Download accelerator catcher or helper

Try de-activating the BHO's, see if the problem goes away. If things don't
work right, you can always re-activate the BHO's in BHODemon. It's a cool
little program to have anyway.

For the time being, I'm still using Internet Explorer. I can't
stomach Microrsoft's standard loadup screen: I need to keep my
brain free of advertising clutter. I also have no reason to
immediately go "out there" upon loading either, or read anyone
else's crap. Therefore I use this simple routine (in IE 6 now):

Tools/Internet Options/General/Home Page/Use Blank

This gives me a nice calm blank page to begin with.
Ahhhhhhh.

You could try to REPAIR Internet Explorer.

Could try: Start ->Settings ->Control Panel ->Add/Remove
Programs -> Microsoft Internet Explorer

Then click Add/Remove button. On next dialogue select
"Repair Internet Explorer". Make sure that you are online
at the time as it might need to re-download some files.
