What is port 135, and how do I find out if it's open?

Much talk has directed toward virus entry through port 135.
When you buy a computer what is the default of this port, open or closed.
How many other ports need I be concerned with and how do I tell if they are
open?
Any enlightent concerning ports appreciated.

Hi Gary

Port 135 and other risky ports will be open. Enable the firewall (in
winxp) before you plug in the internet cable:
