smss.exe = Windows NT Session Manager
[[Application that is used to start, manage, and delete user
sessions or client sessions under Terminal Server.]]
[[SMSS is the Session Manager SubSystem. SMSS’s purpose is to start,
manage, and delete user sessions (or client sessions under Terminal
Server). Under Terminal Server the management part includes dealing
with the different subsystems (OS/2, Win32, POSIX) which a client
session may wish to run.
Recommendation :
An integral part of the operating system, leave alone.]]

C:\WINDOWS\Driver Cache\i386 ???
Are you saying that smss.exe does not run??
I find that hard to beleive.
Which file do you want to rename and run sfc on? I am unclear on
which file.
When you run System File Checker (sfc), do you have to insert your
XP CD in your CD drive? Or does sfc use your i386 folder from your
hard drive?
Are you on a network? Where you ever on a network?
What is the path to i386? i.e. C:\i386 C;\somethinghere\i386
============
VDMDBG.DL_ is a compressed version of VDMDBG.DLL. Note the last
character is an underscore ( _ ). That shows that it's a compressed
file. Like a zipped file, only WinZip can't expand it.
================
How to expand and rename VDMDBG.DL_ to vdmdbg.dll.
vdmdbg.dll should be in C:\WINDOWS\system32 *AND*
C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache. So you have to expand twice
or copy vdmdbg.dll from one file to the other after expanding.
---------
Open a command prompt window.
Start | Run | Type: cmd | OK
This is for expanding from the XP CD.
Insert your XP CD into the drive and enter the following (or Copy
and Paste) command:
EXPAND -R X:\I386\VDMDBG.DL_ Z:\WINDOWS\system32\vdmdbg.dll
Then hit your Enter key.
NOTE :
Change X to = your CD drive letter i.e C {Source}
Change Z to = your hard drive letter i.e. D {Destination}
---
Open a command prompt window. Start | Run | Type: cmd | OK
This is for axpanding from your hard drive.
Enter the following (or Copy and Paste) command:
EXPAND -R X:\I386\VDMDBG.DL_ Z:\WINDOWS\system32\vdmdbg.dll
Then hit your Enter key.
NOTE :
If you found VDMDBG.DL_ on your hard drive. You need to
change X to = your hard drive letter with the actuall path.
The Source and Destination drive letters will be the same.
But the paths will differ.

Regedit opens - no problem there! Virus update has been
accomplished and scan performed - no virus! Went to Kellys-Korner
and tried the three functions to open taskmanger, but none work.
Downloaded and created emergency copies of the utilities.
Can not find VDMDBG.dll via search, but it does turn up
I386\VDMDBG.DL_ . Is that the same?? In search of C:
Windows/system 32 and C:Windows/system 32/dllcache nothing shows
up. In search for System 32 it appears in I386\system 32 and when
you open that file it contains - SMSS.exe (which will not run in
the system 32 mode) and NTDLL.DLL. Should I rename this file and
do the sfc /scannow function??

Pat;
Does this work??
Start | Run | Type: regedit | OK
Does the Registry Editor open??
================
Update your Anti Virus software and do a complete scan.

Try everything listed there.

====================
Can you find VDMDBG.dll?
[[To search for a file or folder
Click Start, point to Search, and then click For Files or Folders.
Click All files and folders.
Click More advanced options to specify additional search criteria.
Click Advanced Options.
Check All of them.]]]
Should be @ C:\WINDOWS\system32 AND C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache
If you find it in just C:\WINDOWS\system32\dllcache | Copy it to:
C:\WINDOWS\system32
Reboot. See what that does.
On the XP CD @ \i386\VDMDBG.DL_
==========
If you can find VDMDBG.dll, rename it to VDMDBG.old | Reboot
If you are not prompted | Start | Run | Type: sfc /scannow | OK
Have your XP CD handy.
=========
Post back. If that doesn't work, we can try to expand the
\i386\VDMDBG.DL_ file.

Wes:
It appears this service has something to do with TaskMgr. I no
longer has that application on the computer. Physically you can
find the .exe, but it will not function due to missing VDMDBG.dll.
This is the same error I receive when I use the
"control-alt-delete function - "This application will not start
because VDMDBG.dll could not be found. Re-installing this
application may fix the problem". What application and were do I
find it?????????
