The following log entry is put into event viewer each time my Windows
2000 PC starts:

Event Type: Error
Event Source: Service Control Manager
Event Category: None
Event ID: 7026
Date: 2003-08-31
Time: 09:33:08
User: N/A
Computer: xxxxxx
Description:
The following boot-start or system-start driver(s) failed to load:
NPF

What does it stand for? I read elsewhere on the usenet that I should
check the registry key
HKLM\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\NPF
but couldn't find anything familiar in there.

I don't know "NPF" but there are filesystem and kernel drivers
"NPFS" and "NBF". Can you locate such a NPF.* file and what are it's
Properties/Version info.?

Well, according to the other post on the usenet, I found in the
Registry Editor the key

HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SYSTEM\CurrentControlSet\Services\NPF

which shows Netgroup Packet Filter. What is this used for?

As far as I know that is part of WinPCap an add-on software used
alone or required by various packet-capture or "sniffer" software.

You may find more at Google under terms
"Netgroup Packet Filter" and
"WinPcap" (http://winpcap.polito.it/)

Usually that would be something you have installed. However, almost
anything is possible and it may be due to a virus/Trojan (possibly).

Are you sure that no entry for this exists in the Services listing.
That can be set to Disabled?

Thanks, I think it is WinPCap after all. It might also be because I
have NMapWin installed.
