I have XP Professional Edition and Windows Update tells me I need the .Net
Framework. I am cautious of downloading / installing this if it is not
needed. How can I tell if I need it? What is the advantages of installing
and the disadvantages of not installing? (in layman's terms please)

Thanks.

The .NET Framework basically allows you to run .NET programs. If you don't
have any .NET programs then you don't need it.

Sean,

Thanks for that. So how do I know whether or not I have any .NET programs
and if I do what are the advantages of installing and the disadvantages of
not installing?

Thanks.

Thanks.

Hi Bill,

Programs requiring .net typically report an error sounding like "could not
find mscorlib.dll" or similar.

The advantages of having .net installed is that these program runs fine :)
and if you have the wrong .net version you get a friendlier error saying
which version is required.

The disadvantage is loss of hard disk space ~60mb
