Hi folks:
the past 2 days, when I boot on, a 'my computer' type window opens up
with a mysterious new folder in it, all by itself, some odd spelling
variation of a real folder, but it appears to be alone by itself- ex
one each day:
C:\Microsof
C:\Program

The first day I ran a full NAV scan, nada, so I simply 'deleted" the
"folder". Today , I checked to see if anything was in it (nope) and
double checked my real Program Files folder, all fine.
I have a nice old Win98 system, and run a kept-up-to-date NAV 2002.

Any clues?
thanks!

I would begin by running a 'spyware' detection software.
Remove all the spyware that you have stored in the form of files and
registry notations.

If that should fail, there are a number of virus detection software
packages on the market that detect viruses using 'heuristics', do a
virus scan with this option enabled and see if possibly its an unknown
virus lurking on the computer.

it definately sounds like spyware. i would run adaware, or spybot
search & destroy if you are an advanced user. a google search should
give you links for both of those programs.

Spybot Search & Destroy: http://security.kolla.de/
AdAware: http://www.lavasoftusa.com/software/adaware/

There shouldn't be anything on either app that would require an
advanced user. Be sure to get the latest update after installing. For
Spybot, the default server is often busy; select a different mirror
site (the USA one is rarely too busy).

Thanks all- I have both and will run them now- dunno why my brain
didn't think of that- but then that's why we have friends on
newsgroups!
I'll let you know if it works.

Indeed! Ad-aware found something suspicious- now deleted - and reboot
was clean! thanks for the reminder, Lj.

What was it so the rest of us might stay away from it.
