Hello All.

I missed out on the free download of Linspire, so now I am considering
buying it. Can those of you who did get it compare and contrast it to
Windows?

Regards.

I haven't had time to fool with it, playing with knoppix now. I
bought it and four other live CD's for ~$20 (Including priority
shipping) from

http://www.linuxpickup.com/default.php?manufacturers_id=167

Placed the order on Sunday had them on Tuesday. Beats spending a day+
downloading the ISO's via dialup.

OK, strictly speaking it ain't freeware . . .

Sharereacter site claims the torrent file is still alive and well.

Link to the bit torrent file:

Linspire 4.5393 full iso, 521 mb

If you are new to bit torrent (that would be me also) you just
download a client software. I'm using something called "burst" for
windows. Double click the bit torrent file (a sort of instruction for
Burst of what to look for and download) and you're downloading the
file.

It would be a good idea to check out some faq's on bit torrent if you
have something unique to deal with (like a recalcitrant firewall).
Bit Torrent is a file sharing system - while you are downloading
linspire someone will be downloading parts of it from you at the same
time. Like all file sharing systems it requires cooperation on the
part of the users.

To find out what things are available on bit torrent you need to check
out one of the many torrent lists
http://www.torrentreactor.net/torrents/section_36
or

What is it like? Well, it is rip-off if you are looking for something
cost effective. CNR will drain you dry. If you are Linux savvy, you
can get around ath by installing your own apps.

On the plus side, it USUALLY installs flawlessly, with 2 clicks.

It wouldn't install on a computer running Windows98 and Mandrake
9.2 for me. Something to bear in mind before you spend money on it.

link works just fine with the affiliate tags removed too.
Yes it does. He said he wanted "Linspire" so I quoted that link.

Personally, at the princely sum of $20 I figure to try them all. Or
the five I got I'm dialup, he might be broadband.

I think I agree with you.

If the computer runs at less than ~800 MHZ, it may seem like the
Linspire distro is painfully slow. I'm running at 333 and try to take
that into account with a live distribution.

For a Linux distro that only takes two or three clicks to mount and
use Linspire is gold, If one were to get serious about Linux (as in
Linux or nothing) Linspire wouldn't be my first choice

Money? They are all free if you know where to look. $49 is a little
too rich in my opinion - from the Bill Gates marketing school, no
doubt?

I like it! Because it is most like windows. I'm not particularly
interested in learning another OS all over again. It installed easily
and to me seems more responsive that the 2 other distros I've tried.

Linspire does make it easy to install software, but it is a yearly fee,
I'm not sure I want to get into that.

I got it on the free download, so haven't paid yet. I'm waiting for
when the Mandrake 10 iso is available to download.

Though it is interesting to play with linux, I'm not going to take the
plunge until I can double click on a program and install it, and I
haven't tried a disto that lets me do that (linspire will, but I don't
want to pay for it)

It's available now. I installed 10 via ftp...much easier.

Would you care to elaborate? Agent gotcha stumped?

Actually I did accidently hit the send key, and decided it might be
appropriate since ftp...much wasn't much of a URL. Agent tries to
highlight anything ftp decimal as a URL. ftp.anything

I fooled with Mandrake when it was in its seventh iteration. I got
everything bur the sound and scanner working - it didn't seem
particularly easy.

Were you planning a full install or wanting a live distribution? Dual
boot?

I planned a full install...which is why I stated that I installed it via
ftp.
