Can someone please explain, in plain English, exactly what Java is and what
it can do for the layman?

I was going to ignore a reply to this but temptation has got the better of
me.
Java when applied to computers is a language that programmers use to write
programs. It is commonly used to write small programs that can be run
(executed) in web browsers (like IE) to react to user input when they view a
web page or click a button on a web page.
What will it do for the layman?
......
It can't make your coffee for you..(the logo for Java is usually a steaming
coffee mug since Java is also a brand of coffee that comes from the island
of Java in the Indonesian Archipelago)
It will perhaps save you money for development costs if you are developing a
web site that will be viewed by a whole spectrum of users, using different
browsers such as IE, Netscape or Opera. In practice though IE has a dominant
placement in the internet browser market (85%) and so it may seem a waste of
effort to cater for 15% of users with 50% of your efforts.

If you would like to see just how powerful Java is, and what you can do with
it, just go to this site, and play the worlds most powerful Java Chess
Program. There are many settings, but if you play any chess at all, just
give it a try, and also note how tiny and small this program is, yet is will
make pieces out of most chess players. If you set the controls to level 10
and give it 60 seconds per move, depending on the computer you are running,
it plays almost at Grand Master level. Amazing for how small the program is
compared to huge programs like ChessMaster 9000 and so forth.
Check it out..
