What is InstallShield Update Manager?

G

George

I'm using a WinXP-pro PC, and Office 2003 and wondered if someone knows
about the "Install Shield Update Manager?

A pop-up in the bottom right just appeared that said "Install Shield needs
to check for updates", then it faded back down into the task bar as an icon
(navy
blue square with white swirl) next to the icons like Outlook, McAfee, volume
control, etc. If you drag over the icon, it's name is "InstallShield Update
Manager".

Is this a virus or adware? How did it get into the task bar? Does it
belong to Sonic--the only other software maker I know that has an "Update
Manager" and one in which I recently installed (at tech support's direction)
an update manager for seemingly unrelated MyDVD software updates.

Do I really need an update? If not, how do I get rid of it forever?

Thanks,
G

It is Sonic's update manager. It is also in the contolr panel (program updates). Call it up and configure it.

That makes complete sense, I had just installed a Sonic app. Also called
InstallShield, determined probably ok to click it...bring it up...and right
there it says have 2 updates available

1-Sonic
2-InstallShield itself

....although telling it to check brings up "no updates available".

Is there a 'simple' way to uninstall all this...it's not in the add/remove
programs. InstallShield says you have to download yet another app that is
an uninstaller. This all seems way too subtle, way too hardwired, way too
intrusive, way too much to undo after it infuses itself without notice to
begin with.

Any suggestions on whether to just keep it, turn it off, or try to extricate
it?

Thanks

Read it again, it says there are two programs being serviced by the update
manager, namely the two you listed above. It has NOTHING to do with actual
updates being available.
