What is DDR550 memory used for? Or anything greater than DDR400

I just ordered a bunch of new parts to build a PC. I wanted to build a
machine as fast as possible, without spending too much on the latest
greatest tech.

The motherboard I ordered is a Intel D875PBZLK which is their latest
desktop board. It will have a P4 3.2Ghz cpu with a 800mhz fsb. The cpu was
almost half the price of the next speed up CPU, that is how I made my
choice-any higher speed would have been MUCH more money. The motherboard is
supposed to use dual channel DDR400 PC3200 memory. So now I wonder, what
kind of system uses faster memory like the DDR550? There must be a use for
it, but I have not seen any systems using it.

Any info is greatly appreciated.

Thanks,

Can be used in systems where the FSB is overclocked to achieve higher than
rated CPU clock speeds.

Is that it? Only for overclocked systems?

Yes...it's for extreme overlcokers capable of having a stable FSB of 275MHz.
Though not many boards can support this.

The only other advantage is when Intel increase the FSB of their future
processors. If for example the FSB incresed to 266MHz...then you can use
that memory.

ddr550's an unofficial speed rating that normally appeals to the
overclockers.

Probably also a ploy by the manufactrurers to appeal to those who think
biggest is best and buy this expecting it to be better than PC2700 even if
the FSB is at 166.
