What is console cable?

Hi,

I just enrol for the course, and I need to buy 3 kind of cables -- cross
over, straight through and console cable.

Can I ask what is console cable?

YOU have to buy the hardware to take the course? Since you have to
provide the hardware for this hardware-related course (since you posted
in a hardware-related group), do you get to keep them after you finish
the course regardless of your grade, or do they get to keep your
property that they should have provided in the first place?

Sounds like the monitor (also called a console). Geez, not only do you
have to provide the network cables, but they require you to supply them
with part of the computer's hardware before you can use it? I sure
don't want to go to that school.

More guesswork:

Could this be a nets & comms course specialising in Cisco stuff? In
which case you may need a special cable(s) to connect a PC to the
console port of many of their routers etc.

It would also make sense that the students provide their own 'tools
of the trade'.
