What is BackWeb? I have two places on my PC where this is found. One is in
the C:\ directory, and the other, bigger one, is in the C:\Program Files
directory.

???

Backweb is a mechanism that runs in the background over the internet.

It has been used in many OEM tools to check for updates or technical news
related to the model of computer being used. It has also been used for less
legitimate purposes such as pulling ads (adware).

In both cases, it does not provide essential functions. For example, you
can check a manufacturer's site on your own instead of relying on automatic
background checks. It is safe to disable this from running at startup.

Thanks for the info. Apparently BackWeb was left over from HP's install. I
was told to go into Start\Control Panel\Add and Remove programs, and then
remove BackWeb. However, it was not listed there. Not even in the Registry.
It was taking up space and doing nothing. So I deleted the whole thing.

It may not be listed in Add\Remove as "BackWeb" per se. It might be listed as
something like H-P Support Updater, or the like.

BackWeb - ugh!

Nice to see you in an XP group, Glen.

Omigosh, it *is* Glen! Yes, good to see him here. Welcome to the darkside,
Glen?

Hi folks....yes, I am lurking in this group. Hopefully I will have something to say
when I get my bearings after the trip through the wormhole. ;-)

The Darkside, eh? And here I thought all this time that meant "Linux". <eg>
