what is "Autorun7"

Hi all

there seems to be a Windows XP (SP3 and I guess earlier) component
called "Autorun7"...

Does anyone know what this is supposed to do? Does it handle all
automatically started Windows components?

I have not found much information about it on the net so if you know
of a web page that provides more detail I would appreciate it.

Doesn't exist on my XP SP3 system.

Where are you finding this named on your system?

For example, would you see a line like this, referencing a seemingly random
EXE file, in a HiJack this log:

O4 - HKLM\..\Run: [Microsoft Autorun7] C:\WINNT\system32\nwizqjsj.exe

If so, it's not a Windows component, it's malware.

It may actually be malware, especially if you don't find references to it.

It's quite ordinary for malware authors to use names that *look like*

However, Electronic Arts did use a file named Autorun7.exe.

Thank you Patrick.

I found this in an error message on my daughters computer (she has all
sorts of games installed) when the computer was shutting down for
reboot.

The references to "Microsoft Autorun7" I found on the internet made me
think that it was an MS product. But because of what you are saying it
likely is not.

I did also see one reference to the Sims game on the internet and it
is indeed an "Electronic Arts" product. I just checked the Sims
installation directory for the Autorun7 executable but I had just
removed the last component of Sims 1 from her machine because of
installing Sims 2...and Sims 2 does not have "Autorun7". The error
message came when the first version of the game was still installed so
I think that is where the error message came from.

I found nothing to indicate this is Microsoft related, I did find evidence
to indicate it is malware related though.
