When you install an Apple product - like one of the above - you might get
the Apple Software Updates module installed that keeps the Apple program..
updated.

Just like everything on your computer - how much something is *needed* is a
personal question.
I almost always do not install (custom install) or uninstall the Apple
Software Updater when I see it on _my_ machines. I choose to update things
manually.
I almost always install Quicktime, Real Alternative, Flash and Shockwave on
all computers I service because they are free and many web pages people
frequent use one or more of those plugins at some point.
