what is an MVP?

I see posts from folks who include MVP after their names? What is it?
How do you get it? What does it get you?

If they are Most Valuable Players, what is their game?

MVP here means Most Valuable Professional. Check the link ROb provided. :)

Thanks, Rob.

Now, who wants to nominate me? But I can't wait for a year.

I have to spend a whole year giving free advice to get 3 letters to use
for a year. How about the whole alphabet in 6 months for 5 years?

I been hanging out longer than that. There's more you gotta do...and there
are more spiffs than just the three letters.

you can make up your own letters too :-)

MVPs are the good guys and gals wearing
white hats who, like the Calvary, ride to our rescue
Many of them seldom sleep; they are so keyed up in
anticipation of the next problem to be solved.

MVPs must undergo rigorous training, and acquire
a wide range of hands-on experience--ranging from
server technology, programming, database mgmt.,
and producing stunning graphics. When MVPs
provide you with advice, you can always rely on it.

The rewards are great, however. Most MVPs are
on a first-name basis with Bill and Melinda Gates;
often fly on private Microsoft jets; are rumored to
get their software free; enjoy international fame;
and supposedly reap secret Microsoft consulting
riches far beyond the imagination of commoners.

I, for one, trust MVPs explicitly.

I would love to learn the URLs of MVPs so
that I could visit such sites and marvel at the
beauty, complexities, and productivities of our
esteemed FrontPage MVP guides' inspired creations.
This would akin to visiting great cathedrals and
temples. Ah, the beauty of it all...

Wow..where do I sign up?

But you'd probably spell it PVM... ;)

Intentional misspelling, Uncle Joe? ;-)

Most of us actually do. In our work. Some of us are just lucky. ;-)
When MVPs
provide you with advice, you can always rely on it.

Well, about as often as you can rely on your software, perhaps. ;-)
Most MVPs are
on a first-name basis with Bill and Melinda Gates

I wish! Yet, I have actually see BillG speak at one summit. A few people
managed to get their picture taken with him.
I, for one, trust MVPs explicitly.

Trust no one. Except Jesus, of course! ;-)

Someone once posted an answer to this same question, saying that
MVP was an acronym for Microsoft Virtual Person. Now, the next
quesiton is, does Virtual mean a person of virute, or does it
mean something surreal such as a computer robot?

Yes.

I would probably spell it in any of these: PVM, PMV, MVP, MPV, VPM, VMP.

Some folks have reported to me that I *occasionally* mispell when i
post. I am thinking of seeking treatment for Spelling Challenged
Syndrome. :)

I was going to reply, "a spell checker that works" but I was afraid you'd take it the wrong
way.

To answer your original question about "what does it get me," the only real way to know is
keep doing what you are doing and see if you get recommended / nominated by "someone."

Keep in mind that being recommended / nominated carries no guarantees.

Also, you'll never know you've been recommended / nominated until you are actually selected.
