I am gathering video from a sony handycam and use hi-8 tapes to record. I want to save this movies in the best possible format but do not want to waste space.

There is a large gap in video quality from 2.1 mbps to 30.0 mbps. What is an option if I want to burn this video to DVD and have it as good as the quality is coming out of the camera?

I am running out of back-up space fast and need a solution.

Thanks

In my opinion for home movies anything more than 5Mbps should require real
justification...

Using TMPGenc I first try the max: 2.5 Mbps vbr with 2.1Mbps as average,
which works more often than not. This allows me to burn a cDVD/miniDVD on a
normal CD. Dvd players which can handle minidvd would still object on higher
bitrates as reading from cd media is not fast enough to support that.

Hello there

The default settings in my program DVD Complete from Dazzle are 8Mbps
maximum, 7 Mbps average and 6.5Mbps minimum. That results in a quite
acceptable quality. I did once play a DVD I had made and compared it to the
image from the camera played directly to DVD, occasionally I thought the DVD
picture was sometimes below par, and where there was something moving quite
fast the camera image sometimes was not so good and yet the DVD looked
better. I don't know enough to explain why that would be.

I have experimented with the settings above and can't say that I
improved anything so I went back to the defaults as mentioned above.

Hope that helps a little
