What is a single file .MHT file

Can some one explain what this is, when it came about and why one would use
it, I recognize that a normal websize unpacks files in to a folder , but I
want to make sure that I am not missing something here- its seems on the
surface there are not downsides.
 
I believe that are the result of saving web pages complete.

Try Save As/Web page complete of a url into a folder.
