What is a "Registry Hive"?

Can anyone please tell me what a "regitry hive" is and
help me resolve the following error message. I'm not
quite sure how to fix it.... Thank you

In this case it a file ntuser.dat found at
%systemdrive%\Documents and Settings\%userprofile%
that store various operating system and software settings specific to the
user.

What happens if you logon as a new user?
