I would like to know exactly what a .pst file is? How can I manage a .pst file in outlook? How can I reduce the size of a .pst file?

1) A .PST file is a set of Personal Folders...in other words, it's a file
for local storage of your mail, contacts, appointments, tasks, etc.
Depending on your verison of Outlook, it may be known as a Special Folder
(Outlook 97), Personal Folders File (Outlook 98-2000), or an Outlook Data
File (Outlook 2002-2003).

2) Not sure what you mean by "manage"...maybe after I answer your other
questions you can elaborate.

3) A .PST file will compact in the background if you have over a certain
amount of whitespace in the file and you leave Outlook open for a while.
You can compact it manually by going into its Properties dialog and clicking
Advanced, then Compact Now. It's a good idea to empty the Deleted Items
folder before trying to compact the file.

Where is the .pst file in Outlook 2002 located and what is it called? I'm still trying to share one .pst file between two home computers so the Contacts etc. stay synced but I can't find the .pst file to move it to a shared folder. Thanks. Sorry to piggyback on this thread.

I have a related question, I just opened Outlook 2000 and was told I needed to either open an pst file, which it wouldn't let me, or create a new one. The huge problem with this is I had emails in my inbox just yesterday (which it was working fine btw) that I need, and now I can't find them/acess them.

It could be called anything or located anywhere. Best bet is to search for
all .PST files. If you're using Windows 2000 or XP, you'll need to enable
searching in hidden or system folders, or you may miss some .PST files.
