What is a proxy?

I am trying to download the update of Adobe Acrobat 8.1 it asks if I have a
proxy. I don't know what a proxy is nor what kind of proxy I have. My
browser is Mozilla Firefox which required me to download in a different
direction. I would appreciate some help.

You probably don't, but if you did, the IE, tools menu, Options, Connection
tab, "Lan Settings" button, checkbox for that would tell you what it was.
