Here is a direct answer to your question.

Firewire or IEEE-1394 interface specification, also known
as Sony's i.LINK,®. FireWire, IEEE-1394 or iLINK are all
different names for the same high-speed digital
technology that enables consumer electronics to easily
interface with computer products.

FireWire and USB are both widely used in the computer and
consumer electronics industries. USB 1.1 is well suited
for computer mice, keyboards, and other lower-bandwidth
input devices.

And while USB 2.0 provides a tremendous speed advantage
over the older v1.1 USB standard, FireWire remains the
high-speed interface performance king for external
devices such as hard drives, DV camcorders and 4X and up
DVD burners/writers.

I noticed you asked in another post about getting videos
from your video camerato your computer. Well you do need
a firewire cable going from your camera to the computer.
I don't know what model Dell you have so I don't know if
you have a firewire port on it. If you don't you can get
one installed in a PCI slot in the computer. A firewire
port is rectangular and is about 1/2 inch long by 3/8
inch wide. Don't get it confused with the USB port. Have
someone who is familure with computers to check if you
have one or to install one for you.

Hope this helped.
