What is a fast save? Or a background save?

What does enabling fast save or background save do? And why doesn't the help
have anything on it?

This is what Help says about FastSaves:

Allow fast saves Speeds up saving by recording only the changes in a
document. When you finish working on a document, clear this option and save
the complete file with a full save. A full save may decrease the file size
of your document.

It is dam useless and dangerous to use. Never use FastSaves. It might have
been useful back in 1960 when 8" floppy drives de rigueur (and Word wasn't
even around) but with today's fast hard drives and network connections, it
is nothing but BIG trouble.

This is what help says about Background Saves:
Allow background saves Saves documents in the background while you work. A
pulsing disk icon appears in the status bar when Word performs a background
save.

Don't believe any of it: it is a piece of fiction and although checking it
doesn't do any harm, it won't save your life if Word crashes.
