what is 600x600x4 dpi?

Hello,

I saw a color laser printer that had a print output of 600x600x4 dpi.
What does the 4 mean? Does this mean it is really 2400x2400 dpi?

More of a marketing gimmick than anything. Apparently it still
prints at 600 dpi, but can vary the color of each pixel better to give
it what they call Contone technology.

No.
 
It's something similar to 1200x1200dpi.
But, don't rely so much to the given resolution. Most times the companies
give higher resolution than the actual.
 
Who knows what this means to them ;-)

It may mean that each toner color slightly shifts the dot positions
(since the toners are semi-opaque) to "fill in" the paper space more, or
make the dots less apparent. But that's a guess.
