if they have failed to install just run Windows Update
again and u still should have updates that need to be
downloaded and install.

Chris:

Thanks for your response.
That's what I thought but I am seeing "Driver Updates (0)". Another word
there is nothing to select even though Install History says "Failed".

Then you can check from the System (Information) Summary if the latest
version code number is listed against the device. Assuming you are
referring to the driver of the display adapter: [Start] > [Run] > Type in
msinfo32.exe > [OK]
[Syst Summary] [Components] [Multimedia] > [Display]
Driver is the last item (Rt. pane)

Or, you may like to verify the hotfix has (or has not) been installed:
"Qfecheck.exe Verifies the Install of Win2000 and WinXP Hotfixes"
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN=US;282784
Note the limitations of Qfecheck.exe at the bottom of the page:
http://support.microsoft.com/default.aspx?scid=kb;EN-US;296861
Please take this as a direction pointing, I have not used this tool.

THat *can* happen if it downloaded an update which on the face of things
looked appropriate to some hardware, but turned out not to be so.

I have noticed system instability since the subject incidence so that I
attempted to restore a system backup by System Restore but the result was a
message saying "It could not restore . . . . " I carried out a repair
installation, did Windows Update and this time all updates went successfully.
One final note: Old installation history never be reset and there are two sets
of the same entries with different dates.
Thank everybody for your efforts to help me.

Hi Cherry,

Thank you for your many alternate suggestions. I will save for my future
reference since I can no longer try them because I have resolved the problem by
resorting to reinstalling the OS.
