Get yourself one of these. It has a dirt cheap camera inside, but has a
relatively short focal length.

This older version is only 320x240 resolution. It could be one of those
USB 1.1 type cameras. At least the focal range is stated in the advert
for this one - Focus Range: 5-13mm. That's a bit better than a digital
camera with macro capability.

There are also companies selling "usb microscope", but those are
physically a lot larger and clumsy for close work. But at least
you might get a focal adjustment with one of those.

Thanks. Going medical... but they relatively more expensive than regular
webcams ... :)

It's just a regular web cam (Sonix/Microdia controller), with a tiny lens on it.
They go for around $50 or less.
