XP Pro SP3

I'm starting to see "An error was detected on device ... during a paging
operation" in the system event log, but no indication of any errors during
any other operations.

I intend to replace the drive when I get back from vacation, but wonder if
my swap file just happens to be sitting on a bad spot or there are other
errors that just aren't making it to the event log.

A tip for posting copies of Error Reports! Run Event Viewer and double
click on the error you want to copy. In the window, which appears is a
button resembling two pages. Click the button and close Event
Viewer. Now start your message (email) and do a paste into the body of
the message. Make sure this is the first paste after exiting from
Event Viewer.

Not all errors are recorded in Event Viewer logs. Errors occurring
before Event Viewer logging starts or if, for any reason, the Event
Viewer service is not running are examples . Malware can disable Event
Viewer and in this situation errors are unrecorded. Errors related to
problems with web site pages are also never recorded in Event Viewer
logs.I am not sure how knowing this helps.

If you are concerned about your hard drive try HD Tune. HD Tune only
gives information and does not fix any problems.

Download and run it and see what it turns up. You want HD Tune
(freeware) version 2.55 not HD Tune Pro (not Freeware) version 3.00.
http://www.hdtune.com/

Select the Info tabs and place the cursor on the drive under Drive
letter and then double click the two page icon ( copy to Clipboard )
and copy into a further message.

Select the Health tab and then double click the two page icon ( copy to
Clipboard ) and copy into a further message. Make sure you do a full
surface scan with HD Tune.

You could also run chkdsk.

I'm starting to see "An error was detected on device ... during a
paging operation" in the system event log, but no indication of any
errors during any other operations.

Turns out that the "error" was coming from my USB-connected backup drive
going to sleep!

The complete message was

"An error was detected on device \Device\Harddisk2\D during a paging
operation."

I only looked at the "D" at the end, and missed the "Harddisk2" bit in
the middle and jumped to the conclusion it was my "D:" drive failing,
since that's where my swap file is located.

Disk #2 is a 1TB Seagate "FreeAgent" that goes to sleep when it's been
idle for 15 minutes, and that's apparently ->sometimes enough to
genereate the error message.

Unfortunately, I'd already replaced my D: drive before I figured that
out. Of course, I replaced it with a bigger and faster drive, so maybe
that's not such a problem :-) I also got to find out that my Acronis
True Image backup software actually works.
