OK - I've done the deed (thanks to S.Heenan for persuading me), but I have
some very serious problems (and I'm running the latest revision for my
board - a SOYO DRAGON KT400 Platinum Ultra) and everything is set correctly
(i.e. 166x12.5=2.083)

Basically could someone *PLEASE* tell me why both Windows (XP Pro) and Aida
32 report the speed as 1250MHz?! It's as though it's defaulting to 12.5x100.
My RAM is PC2700, not 3200 as I think I previously reported - that couldn't
be the problem...could it?!

In the system properties it reads 'Athlon CPU 1250MHz' - it doesn't even
give it the model number!

Aida reports "CPU Type AMD Athlon XP-A, 1250 MHz (6.25 x 200)".

Someone please tell me where I've gone wrong! If it was a simple multiplier
issue, well I'd have sorted that, no problem, but it isn't! It appears to be
more deeply rooted than that.

Do I not have adequate cooling? I have 4 case fans, a cooler on the GPU and
a fairly hefty CPU heatsink and fan and I applied AS3. The PSU is a Chieftec
and it's 380W - is that not sufficient?! I realise I maybe grasping at
straws here, but I've nothing else left to grasp at!

The rest of the system (as if it matters)

3xHDs (1 WDC 200GB, 1 Maxtor 40 GB and a Samsung 80GB)
Radeon 9700 Pro
Audigy 2 Platinum Ex
Sony DRU-510A
DVD-ROM

And that's more or less it. Is that too much for a 380W PSU?!

I'm just about ready to take everything out and put the 1700 back in - at
least that WORKED.

One final thing, I've not got SP1 installed, but it has nothing to do with
that, surely?! I can't see what's being reported at boot, because the
graphics card takes about 5 seconds to 'kick in' and, by the time it does,
it's at the Windows XP splash.

One last point - it's being reported as an Athlon A..Now, someone correct me
if I'm wrong, but I was under the impression that 'A' was Tbird, 'B' was
Tbred and 'C' was Barton. Or am I completly wrong in that assumption?

Anyone help me get this thing reporting as it should? Otherwise the CPU's
going back (if Watford will take it). Otherwise, it's eBay...

HELP!!

Thanks

Panic over - I had to force the CPU frequency - it wasn't having it on
default! ;o)

<SNIP - Lots of stuff>

Did you by chance forget to set the FSB? Most motherboards default to
a 100Mhz FSB (standard for Duron CPUs). There's usually a jumper or
DIP switch on the board that needs to be changed before the 166Mhz and
200Mhz FSB speeds are accessible. It's sometimes called the
"overclock jumper" as this lets you change the FSB from the BIOS
settings from 100Mhz on up to whatever the max is for the board.

It's easily overlooked. I did the same thing myself. It shouldn't ID
as a 1.25GHz TBird though. It should still register as an AthlonXP
CPU, just one that's slower than you expect.
