I usually use my highlight and backspace or spacebar to delete a word or
group of words. For some reason, it has stopped working and now I have to use
my highlight and delete key. How can I restore the other function since I
have been using it for years and consistanly find myself trying to use it
rather than highlight delete? Someone please help, I have spent days trying
to figure this out. Thanks

Is this in Word? If so, when you open Word look down at the status bar at
the bottom. There should be the letters ovr. Double click on it to change
it back the way it was or to toggle it from Overtype to Insert.

Yes, it happens in word, but also with notepad, wordpad, etc. It is making me
slightly nuts. I tried what you said, but it didn't make any difference. I
typed in a word, highlighted it and then clicked the spacebar, nothing. Then
I tried highlighting it and hitting the backspace, nothing. Only the delete
button works to do this. It was working all 3 ways. Would it be something in
the accessiblity area? My daughter came down and she was trying to set things
up to be easier for me to use, but the functions there did not apply to my
problems. Thank you for your quick reply!

Hmmm....I'm not sure on that one. If no one else has a good answer you might
try using system restore to roll the system back to a date before the problem
started happening.

Is there any chance the keyboard has a problem (I'm thinking out loud...)?

I think it is more a command issue or overide? It was working fine until
lately. The keyboard is new. Thought of that already. It's a conspiracy
between my computer instructor and my keyboard. He hates anyone using that
technique. But, it so ingrained in how I work. Thanks anyway. Nita

Maybe the "Insert" key on the keyboard was accidentally pressed? It does
pretty much the same thing Mike said but instead of limiting the change to
Word, it changes it all throughout Windows and most Windows programs.
