Yes, and that maximum is four. However, most of us use the word
"partition" informally to include logical drives.
The maximum number of logical drives in an extended partition is 23,
and that's because the letters A and B are reserved for diskette
drives, and one drive letter has to be a primary drive, there are 23
letters left.
However, since you can have multiple physical drives, you could very
easily have more than 24 primary partitions and logical drives in
extended partitions. Since there aren't enough drive letters to
support this, you can use "mounted drives" for some and them, and have
access to as many as you want. See
