What Happens When IP Address Changes

Windows XP. I am having a problem when using Remote Desktop when connecting
to my workplace via a VPN from home. Since my workstation(s) at work have
their IP assigned dynamically, they change from time to time. This causes my
Remote Desktop session to fail, becuase I am using the IP address. When I
try to get around this problem by using the computer name (e.g., Doug) the
Remote Desktop does not connect. How may I use the computer name, and thus
not have to worry about then the IP changes? I suspect this has something to
do with a DNS. Any help would be appreciated. God bless.

You can't, since you can't make the DNS query until you're connected.

You need to query an external DNS source which can handle dynamic updates,
which is what the service prodvides.

If the workstation(s) are on a LAN then you also need to get the local network
administrators to configure them to use a static LAN IP address.

Since I am the LAN administrator, I can do that (set as static IP). Thanks
for the tips. God bless.
